some gift knitting, slinky ribs in progress

I have had a few events recently that required knitted gifts. (REQUIRED, you hear?) First was a baby shower. I, of course, knit a bunny as I am incapable of not knitting one of these when a baby is due, apparently. (Ravelry link – which indicates that I have knit this pattern 12 times and I know a couple of those projects include more than one bunny. I may need a bunny intervention.)

And an Avery sweater (Ravelry link). This is a pattern I have been intending to knit for a while. The pattern was designed by my friend Kristi and I wanted to upsize it for Niels. Now I still want to and since I waited so long I'd have to upsize it even farther. It might happen some day! Or maybe I'll knit it for other babies.

Yesterday I attended a housewarming and so I brought a hanging mitered towel that I had been working on but didn't have an intended recipient. I think this one turned out very nicely! (Ravelry link)

At the same party I saw a friend's daughter whose birthday gift from me was woefully late. I hope it was worth the wait! (Ravelry link)

Planning ahead, here is a jellyfish for the next birthday girl, who turns one next weekend. Her mom saw me working on it and she's too little to use the internet, so it's okay to post. (Ravelry link)

That's all the FOs, and now I feel like it's a lot! They were all kid-sized, though and some had been in the works for a while! This is what I'm working now.

It's the Slinky Ribs top by Wendy Bernard. (Ravelry link) I'm using Rowan Revive which is a recycled cotton, silk, linen, and viscose yarn. I really like the tweedy look of the yarn and the way it's knitting up so far. I need to spend some quality with a tape measure and the bust shaping worksheet from Big Girl Knits to figure out how many short rows and where. I have an inkling that I need to start them soon but the last time I approximated on bust shaping short rows I had to go back and do it all again. I'm trying to avoid that! I don't actually want to knit every sweater I make twice, in spite of what my Boba friends might think.

stitches ’09

Stitches West is over. I am sad to see Kristi go (and Jeni, but she's here for another week) but I am kind of relieved that it's all over. I didn't even go at all on Friday and it still felt like a packed weekend to me. I handed out a bunch of my business cards (seen below) to various yarn companies and designers. Hopefully some of them will need my services.

I had a class with Cat Bordhi today and aside from learning all sorts of things about sock design and lots of tips for perfect toe-up sock cast ons and how to make your SSKs tighter she gave me some advice for becoming a sought-after tech editor. I am going to follow her suggestions and see how that goes for me.

So, what did I buy? The first day, I bought buttons for  my February Lady Sweater. I walked up to the Button Lady booth with the sweater and said I needed buttons and she pulled out the most perfect green/brown horn button from her vintage buttons box. Fifty cents each!

Perfection. Thursday, I also bought the Woolly Thoughts book on modular knitting ideas from the Village Spinners and Weavers booth.

I was ogling Norah Gaughan Vol. 4 and the flower child sweater. Foolishly, I didn't pick up the yarn for it right then from WEBS. I did get the booklet and on Saturday I ordered the yarn (in a lovely teal color). The other yarn purchases happened at Bobbin's Nest Studio's after Stitches party. I got one ball of Panda Soy solid to coordinate with a variegated color that I have so I can use the solid for the toe, heel and cuff. My impulse purchase was ten balls of chocolate brown Vickie Howell Craft yarn. It's really pretty. I don't know what I'm going to use it for yet. I couldn't not take it though. I love that color.

After all of this my stash number is now at 44394.5 yards or 25.2 miles of yarn. I just finished a whole sweater, but that's still up a mile since my last calculation. That's somewhat disappointing!  Ah well, head down, keep knitting!

lightning bolt man cape done!

I finished Niel's Greatest American Hero cape from New Knits on the Block last night. He has decided already that he likes the playsilk capes better because they don't choke him. Never knit for a five-year-old! I'm hoping that I can find a solution for the tie that he doesn't mind, since that is the problem area.

Now that I have my 6s back, I can start on Erik's seamless hybrid.
