I am not even sure I know what that means? Like for a sock?

Yes, for a sock. You put in waste yarn where the heel would go and you knit it in afterwards. I think it's mostly done with toe-up socks.

I think that most of them I've seen done have short row heels. This website has links to just about every toe and heel out there. http://mysite.verizon.net/vze8mnnp/toesheels.htmlOf course, this website only lists one afterthought heel. Figures. I have a friend that's done a couple afterthought heels and she's always done short row heels.

I haven't done one (yet), but I believe I've seen it mentioned in one or more of Elizabeth Zimmermann's books.

I ended up basically making a toe, it's the same process. It worked quite well!
